Day 8 - HUGE Afternoon!
Feb 22 PM - We went back to our hotel in Camagüey for lunch and afterward, set off to the north to Sierra de Cubitas, a dry scrubby area of small farms and not much else. We did pass by the 'international airport' for Camagüey, noticing many large, extremely old airplanes, as well as some smaller private-looking modern ones. We drove past small farms where plantains were grown, past a military-looking installation, and entered a flat open area of few widely spaced farms. Around 4PM, we passed a cement factory and turned onto a red dirt road (Remember the red tractor and trailer? Maybe they started out there.) After a short drive, we disembarked and began our search for more warblers, including the endemic Oriente Warbler and the Cuban Gnatcatcher, a diminutive little bird similar to the Blue-gray Gnatcatcher, but having 2 distinctive black half-moon-like markings on their faces.
