Day 10 - Almost back in Havana
Feb. 24 - This place was a surprise to me because I thought we were going straight to Havana. I was delighted when we turned off the autopista to visit this place. Rio Hatiguanico is a place where people can go tarpon fishing or walk on a boardwalk to look around. I think we were supposed to have our breakfast here (we had brought the infamous ham & cheese sandwiches and hard-boiled eggs with us!), but someone was using the little shelter that had picnic tables. William wanted us to look for the Zapata Sparrow here and so we knew the drill. We walked quietly along behind William as he held up his recorder which was now playing the call of the sought-after bird. A pair quickly came into the shrubs near us. They seemed highly indignant that another sparrow was calling from within their territory. We got some very good looks - and some got great photos - and then we finished our walk, boarded the bus and headed to Havana.
