Day 10 - Billboards

Feb. 24 - This post doesn't actually pertain strictly to Feb. 24, but rather is about what we saw on the many highways and smaller roads on which we travelled. In the US, we're used to seeing billboards that advertise various products or places. There were none of those in Cuba, rather each billboard had a theme extolling the patriotism and heroism of Fidel and Raúl Castro and Che Guevara and expressing pride at the events of the revolucion which happened on Jan. 1, 1959. In some towns there were small memorials for the men (14,000 of them), some as young as 18, who died when Cuba sent troops (300,000 of them) into Angola between 1975 and 1991. There were also many billboards expressing solidarity with 5 Cuban men who are in US prisons on alleged spying charges.
